Success of Special Schools Shop in Yeovil
A unique business venture in Somerset, supported by Somerset County Council and involving pupils from special schools across the county is aiming to fill that gap.
Sense-ational Pop-up Shop appeared in Yeovil’s Quedam Centre in April and was a great success.
The student really enjoyed working in the shop and selling products they had made. Feedback from the community has been incredible and some products are still being requested, even though the shop had shut.
Products ranged from silk scarves, ornaments, marmalade, aprons, badges to beautiful limited-edition paintings, cards, sweets and plants.
The project is led by Special Educational Needs. Somerset Expertise (sen.se), with the support of charity Young Somerset. Sen.se is a partnership between special schools and specialist provision within Somerset. This shop was also supported by a team of volunteers to enable the shop to stay open over the Easter holidays.
The pop-up shop demonstrates the power of collaboration, enabling partners to provide more opportunities for young people to gain valuable work experience and skills for life. The project so far has been a major success and was chosen as a finalist in the Somerset Education Business Partnership Awards 2019.
It was nominated for the Careers Inspiration in Education Award.
