6th Form work experience placement at Bay Tree café, Glastonbury
Last year, 6th Form students at Avalon School identified their work preferences during the accreditation ‘Preparation for work’. Students have been allocated and attended suitable, weekly work experience placements in the local community.
The Bay Tree Café said: ‘H is going from strength to strength at The Bay Tree Cafe and is now able to use her initiative in seeking out tasks which need to be completed. She enjoys the variety of tasks on offer at the cafe from tidying, labelling, helping compiling menu boards, preparing food etc. H can now take orders from known customers, asking relevant questions when serving their drinks/meals. She will initiate appropriate conversation with customers and other staff. H is always happy whilst working and is an excellent member of the team’.
Ongoing arrangements have been made as 6th Form students from Avalon School have returned to the Bay Tree café again this year to take part in further work experience placements.
Both 6th Form Avalon students and Bay Tree café staff have made valuable links and have had a positive experience through this work experience placement. It has been a fantastic opportunity to observe the students’ independence and problem solving skills, while working in the community with unfamiliar people. Recently, some of our students on work placement at Bay Tree café, prepared food for an Afternoon Tea event which our 6th Form students were invited to attend.
Overall this has been a really positive partnership between the school and workplace so we thank Bay Tree Café for their support in providing these invaluable opportunities for our young people.
