As we come to the close of the year, we extend our gratitude to all the teachers, school nurses, members of the SHARE team, commissioners, youth workers and schools in Somerset who have joined LIFEbeat’s growing community in the Southwest. As you know, we are celebrating our first academic year of LIFEbeat PSHE and Wellbeing Trainings for schools in collaboration with Somerset County Council, Public Health. It has also been exciting to collaborate in developing The Somerset Wellbeing Framework and a deep heartfelt thank you must go to Jameelah Ingram and Fiona Moir for their passion, vision and commitment. We are excited to be extending and deepening our work over the next two years, building our LIFEbeat community in Somerset, launching our first LIFEbeat summer camp for local young people. We hope you will continue to be part of the journey as we collaborate to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of the young people of Somerset and the professionals who serve them. Please join the LIFEbeat Somerset Training Network group on Facebook here. We look forward to more connection, community building and LIFEbeat fun in 2019. In the meantime, thank you once again and we wish you a wonderful holiday time with family and friends. With love and gratitude from Lucy Sicks (CEO) and the LIFEbeat Team

Somerset Wellbeing Framework Launch, July 2018 “I just wanted to say a huge congratulations to LIFEbeat and the amount of work they have done running up to it. It was brilliant and I’ve come back very energised and brimming with pride, enthusiasm and praise," Trudi Grant, Director of Public Health

This year LIFEbeat has begun to build community in Somerset. PSHE leads, school nurses and mental health staff have come together and we have trained teachers from 63 schools. In addition, it has been a pleasure to collaborate with the SCC team to launch the Somerset Wellbeing Framework with a wonderful event at Frogmary Farm in July this year and a workshop this Autumn on Schools as Communities of Belonging. What an inspiration it has been to witness the passion and commitment of so many teachers who believe in their pupils and the unique potential of every individual. Marion Jarrett, Hugh Sexey Middle School, shares her work with Year 6 on Mental Health and wellbeing following the PSHE training.

In 2019 we will be offering another 3 day PSHE training course, so please do recommend to colleagues within your settings. We will also be delivering trainings to enhance the three evidence-based pillars of Belonging, Relationships and Healthy Lifestyles. We will also extend our work into West Somerset to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the area with trainings and a youth-led intervention on the theme of Body Image.

“I have a far clearer understanding of the issues, how to approach the subject sensitively and understand some of the issues that before the training I would have no understanding of through my own life. I feel more confident in recognising early warning signs in my student cohort and knowing how to proceed appropriately," Training participant

In the last month, we have enjoyed a wonderful LIFEbeat reunion bringing together young people and staff from our Summer Camps.

A three-year plan
As we approach 2019 and reflect on 10 years of successfully delivering transformational camps, trainings and ongoing support, our LIFEbeat community is stronger and bigger than ever. Looking ahead, our goal over the next three years is to serve more young people by establishing three regional LIFEbeat communities, delivering camps and programmes for local young people.
